Season 3, Episode 3: Continuous Glucose Monitors – Are CGMs Necessary For People Without Diabetes?
Are continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) meant for people without diabetes?
In this episode of Dia-Logue: The Diapoint Podcast, we explore the pros and cons of using CGMs for those with and without diabetes.
To start the debate on this topic, we are joined by Michael Matafonov, a person living with Type 1 Diabetes and Dr. Nandu Thalange, a very well-established pediatric endocrinologist based in Dubai.
This is the first of three episodes where we will unpack this discussion to uncover the truth behind the latest wearable trend and learn if CGMs are really useful or necessary for people without diabetes. Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3!

Dr Nandu Thalange is a distinguished pediatric endocrinologist with over 30 years’ experience as a clinician. He was appointed Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at Mohamed Bin Rashid University in April 2019. Throughout his career, he has embraced innovation and excellence.
Nandu came to Dubai in August 2017 to establish the pediatric diabetes, endocrinology and weight management service at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital. Using his significant UK experience, he developed these services in conjunction with medical, nursing, pharmacy, RCM and administrative colleagues.
He now leads a strong multidisciplinary diabetes team, comprising medical, nursing, dietetic and psychology colleagues. The team embraces technology, with all patients using glucose sensors, and a number are on insulin pumps.
In the growth field, he introduced the arginine test – a low-cost, safe and effective test for growth hormone deficiency, and brought in the BoneXpert radiology system, which provides patients with instant bone age results, greatly facilitating clinical management. In weight management he introduced the use of body composition analysis to aid diagnosis and management of this challenging group.
Nandu’s clinical research has been published in leading journals. Along with his pediatric clinical research team, he has conducted extensive multi-center clinical trials as well as two major international trials, involving nearly 700 children worldwide, which led to the approval of insulin detemir and degludec in children. He continues to publish and present widely and has a significant publication record.
