Season 3, Episode 13: Don’t Believe Everything You See – How Social Media Can Damage Your Health

In this episode of Dia-Logue: The Diapoint Podcast, Pam and Diapoint’s Digital Marketing Manager, Toqaa Gad, discuss health and social media.

The internet is an amazing resource for information, but it can also be dangerous if you don’t know what’s true and reliable. Particularly, content shared on social media. There is a lot to be learned from social media, but when it comes to our health, there is also a dark side full of unhealthy suggestions and misinformation.

Some of these posts are health hazards. In between the quality information is a sea of misleading posts about exercise, health, and chronic conditions. Some even glamorize eating disorders.

We discuss:

  1. The importance of getting proper, qualified medical advice before you try something you see on social media
  2. Some pretty shocking examples of harmful “news” and social media challenges
  3. How to dig deeper to determine if the health advice on social media is true or not, or from a reliable source
  4. Toqaa also shares her findings from her thesis about how social media is affecting girls and young women in relation to their body image and self esteem.

Disclaimer: It should go without saying that the Diapoint podcast is not intended as or should not be used as personal medical advice. You will hear us interview medical experts and others, but please always always ask your qualified doctor, diabetes team or other expert about your health. What works for one person does not always work for another person. What you should always do when you discover any new health information is ask YOUR doctor about it. This information should empower you to have a discussion with your healthcare providers about it. Diapoint, our guests, sponsors and business partners are not here to replace that advice. Living a full, healthy life means taking the proper medical advice from your qualified physicians, diabetes team or other healthcare providers.
